Quercus, one of Rhodes Island's intelligence officers stationed in Victoria, is a master of the traditional Originium Arts of Victoria's Gododdin peoples. Prior to joining Rhodes Island, she traversed Victoria's southern wastelands with the mission of healing her compatriots in the wasteland settlements.

Imaging tests reveal clear, normal outlines of internal organs, and no abnormal shadows have been detected. Originium granules have not been detected in the circulatory system and there is no sign of infection. At this time, the operator is believed to be uninfected. [Cell-Originium Assimilation] 0% Operator Quercus shows no signs of Originium infection. [Blood Originium-Crystal Density] 0.13u/L Operator Quercus has a certain amount of exposure to Originium, but as her primary operation sites are in the wilds, there is little risk of crystal density increasing further.

Quercus's Originium Arts and her lifestyle all stem from the traditions of her hometown, rooted in a primordial reverence and mimicry of nature. She enjoys being outside, can skillfully climb trees with her bare hands, can distinguish the different scents of flowers and cries of fowlbeasts upon the wind, and claims that the closed-off environment of the Rhodes Island landship makes it hard for her to breathe. As for her Originium Arts, while they are able to mend wounds, they are also able to make seeds grow quickly into vines, or make weeds sprout along distant mountain roads. This procedure is usually accompanied by a ceremonial language with no discernable effect. According to her, in her tradition this is known as a dialogue with the land. Though her Originium Arts can promote plant growth, Quercus will not use it to help save the wilted potted plants of other operators. 'While I could use my Originium Arts to revive your plants, that is not something the flowers ever wanted to show you. You'd better water them instead.' 'There are no issues with Rhodes Island's circulation or ventilation systems. If Quercus is mentioned in any complaint about the air quality sent by other operators, the contents can be safely ignored. There's a high likelihood of it being a psychosomatic effect after listening to Quercus.' —Additional memo from an Engineering Department Operator

As an operator stationed abroad, Quercus spends most of her time away from the Rhodes Island landship. Though she is primarily active in Victoria, this does not affect the fact that she maintains cordial relationships with many operators. This is largely due to her excellent memory: just by eating lunch with someone in the cafeteria, she'll instantly be able to recognize that person and call out their name, even after half a year. Additionally, each time she shows up at Rhodes Island, she always brings back a variety of gifts and local specialties, enough for all her friends. Strangers who partake of her gifts quickly become her friends too. Of course, if someone is overly enthusiastic about her preserved fruits, fresh flower cakes, or other handmade products, she'll remind them that 'bulk orders must be made in advance.' As a result, each time she contacts Rhodes Island, she tends to include some private information, such as 'the homemade fruit wine has fermented,' 'I've stored three crates of canned seasoned sandworms,' etc. While carrying out field missions abroad in Victoria, Quercus always has ways of turning her base into a popular spot for visitors. So far, she's tried setting up a flower shop, a jam bakery, and a co-op bookstore. Thanks to her cheerful and gentle image as a shopkeeper, all her business ventures have gone well, leading many to wonder if she's actually doing her job or just trying to live life to its fullest. Still, the contents of her reports have never given any cause for disappointment. ...Has she gotten addicted to the city's hustle and bustle? It's almost as if she's terrified of empty places.

I happened to run into the travelling doctor while out on a mission. I'm a bit ashamed to admit, but it was originally my mission to protect the Infected, and she actually beat me to it. Rhodes Island was newly established at the time and we were in need of helping hands. Though she wasn't Infected, she was still a benevolent doctor who treated the Infected as equals, while also displaying some professional combat prowess, so I tried reaching out to her. Somewhat to my surprise, she was not the dogmatic tribal healer I made her out to be, instead exhibiting an open-mindedness I rarely saw in the other locals. She candidly admitted that her traditional Originium Arts and herbal remedies were unable to treat many ailments. Rhodes Island's hopes of treating Oripathy clearly appealed to her, and she provided the following conditions for her joining: she would not leave Victorian soil, she would not kill anyone in the line of work, and Rhodes Island would share its experiences of handling the Infected with her. I thought we would be able to meet all three of those conditions. —Rhodes Island Operator, Bitter Root [Classified Log] According to Operator Bitter Root, Quercus should have a history of military service. Taking her test results and personal wishes in consideration, Quercus will serve as a Rhodes Island intelligence officer operating long-term in Victoria, reporting directly to Kal'tsit. Authorization Change: From now on, Operator Quercus will report directly to the Doctor.

[Classified Log] Quercus has never taken the initiative to bring up her military service. Most of the time, she acts as if she'd never left the soil of her hometown. However, when Rhodes Island obtained her Special Forces combat history during a background check, she spoke openly about a conflict that broke out in a Victorian enclave, clearly reciting the full names of every young soldier under her at the time. She made no attempt to turn away from the fact that she would go on to lose all her comrades-in-arms during the ensuing battles, an all-too-common experience. In her own words, she was already well acquainted with death, being the only healer in her hometown. She is even glad she managed to survive to the end, and was thus able to sing lamentations for each and every one of those children, sending them off in a foreign land. While she did not explicitly admit to any regrets during the conversation, before she made the decision to join Rhodes Island she displayed an extremely cautious attitude, carefully inquiring about Rhodes Island's philosophy, course of action, and what we fought for. Presumably, she did not want to be deceived into taking up arms again. As for the young soldiers, who Quercus called 'children', they had apparently taken her rallying cries to heart, plunging into the conflict with full faith. While she returned home bitter and angry, they did not return home at all. In response to her frankness, the HR operator answered her questions as thoroughly as possible. However, after signing her preliminary contract, she slyly asked the staff in charge of her onboarding: 'Since you don't need an army, what's the use of knowing that I was a soldier before?' While Operator Quercus has been genuine with Rhodes Island, her statement also rings true. As a mere commander of a squad, there was no way for her to understand the internal political struggles in Victoria underpinning that conflict. Rhodes Island can trust her, but also needs to avoid thrusting her into certain subjects of investigation. —HR Operator

Even now, there are still some in Quercus's hometown that are hostile to and do not trust her, as well as those who accept neither her healing nor her blessings. Many people harboring guilt in their heart would be reluctant to face the judgment back home, but Quercus, after returning from the battlefield weighed down by such feelings, knocked on the doors of each and every deceased, one by one, apologizing to their relatives waiting anxiously inside for being unable to bring back even a single ID tag.
Last time I was an assistant, I think I was still thirteen or fourteen, treating people with my mum. Of course, I can do much more than hand out herbals and sing well-wishing verses now. If you need my help, ask away! Don't be shy.
I think I've seen a few new faces this time after returning to Rhodes Island. Dr. {@nickname}, how does it feel to have more and more people under you? Do you feel that brimming and bursting vitality? We always say back home, rage against death with new life.
Rhodes Island Bridge-Climbing Competition? Dr. Kal'tsit shut that down midway, didn't she? Citing lack of safety ropes for all the contestants and so on. Well, I wasn't that likely to win it, and the look on Dr. Kal'tsit's face was a much greater sight to see anyway.
You look put out with all these reports on your desk. Don't worry, if there's any danger, I'll know it by the scent. But! If you just don't want to work, I can't help you there.

Of course it's much easier to gather intel when you're a lone operator. But every time I'm in the country, I pick a bag full of berries while I'm free, and I think to myself, maybe I want someone to share with after all. Otherwise, I've got no one to tell me how great I am at picking.

You get the sense I served from how I work? You only got that impression from seeing my files. Service members come in all shapes and sizes, too. Some only like to read and research their comms tech, some spend all day dreaming about going on holidays in the city to see idol concerts...

Dr. {@nickname}, you might be covering your face, but I can tell you've perked up a lot more compared to when you came back from Chernobog. But if you spend the whole time under this low of a ceiling, your mind'll get dull. Head out onto the deck every now and then. Get some fresh air. It's good for you.

When I looked after the ill back home, I ran across a couple Infected calling themselves 'Reunion'... and then I got into a fight with them. I can't stand it, seeing those children with firelight in their eyes lost in all the pointless violence, about to burn themselves through.

Those who depart us receive the land's forgiveness, and rest in her embrace... but some people go too quickly, the roots of the forests of their homes unable to hold onto their hands. Was that not like me, being so serious? You really should've seen me when I worked back home.
Not sure if the Doctor's a light sleeper... I'd better stand watch quietly.
Nice to meet you, Doctor. Call me Quercus. It's the first time we've met, but the intel on your desk about northern Victoria is straight from me... What, even you're going to tell me my reports aren't standard?
I wish I'd learned all this a little earlier.

In my hometown, you had to make a choice with Originium Arts. Whether to terrorize others, or to aid them... The result of my greed was that I couldn't commit properly to either. Even so, would you still have faith in me?
As long as it's your decision, I'll have no objections.
It's a major responsibility.
Shouldn't we consider marching routes other than on the ground?
The more defined a battle's goal is, the clearer tactics become.
Will the land shake with fury, or display her mercy?
If you're still hesitating, I can give some advice.
I will stand guard here.
Beginning collection of battlefield information.
The land will forgive all in the end, but not now.
The wind blows through; the leaves tell stories of those who sleep.
Arbor, reach your hands to me.
I remember your face as well, now.
Wow, incredible! I've got the urge to snap a formal salute just to show my respect.
That was a perfect operation! Once we're back, dinner will taste even better.
They can't be running far. Do you plan to pursue?
It's alright, let me organize the retreat. I leave our next counterattack to you.
It always feels a little hard to catch my breath when I'm shut in here for long.
Oh? Are you as much of a prank-lover as all those kids?
You want to hear me sing? Do you know who our songs are sung for? Usually, it's for the gravely ill.
